Harry’s Law

Could some TV network out there with some guts and judgment please take on Harry’s Law? Unlike all of that reality junk, it’s a good show that deserves to be seen!

Why is Rocky Colavito Not In the Hall of Fame?

How someone who is one of only 16 players in history to hit four home runs in one game (in Colavitos case, each time he came to the plate) and was the fifth player in American League history to have eleven consecutive 20-home run seasons (1956–66), exceeding 40 home runs three times and 100 runs batted in six times during that span, and who also also led the AL in home runs, RBI, and slugging average once each; and who, hitting all but three of his 374 career home runs in the AL, ranked behind only Jimmie Foxx (524) and Harmon Killebrew (then at 397) among the league’s right-handed hitters when he retired; who, in 1965, playing every game, became the first outfielder in AL history to complete a season with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, and whose 1272 AL games in right field ranked eighth in league history at the end of his career, is not in the Hall of Fame eludes me.

On top of that, in his 1,841-game career, Colavito batted .266 with 374 HRs, 1,159 RBI, 971 runs, 1,730 hits, 283 doubles and 21 triples. As an outfielder, he recorded 3323 putouts, 123 assists, 26 double plays, and committed 70 errors in 3516 total chances for a .980 fielding percentage.

What’s up with that?

I will never forget that game in 1959 when he hit the four homers. The atmosphere was electric as he strode to the plate for the fourth time. Nobody, not even I, the 14-year-old kid listening to the radio in Cleveland, believed he could do it again, but he damn sure did.

Larry Dixon Needs a Ride

So who’s gonna show the guts to hire Larry Dixon in a nitro car? DSR? John Force? This is a three-time champion in top fuel. How about somebody show a little backbone?

The Post-American World

If I can convince ONE PERSON out there to read this book to get a realistic view of America in the 21st century, then as far as I’m concerned I’ve done a good thing.

It’s Ba-aack!

The Moon has cycled back into the picture to re-create last month’s conjunction of itself, Venus, and Jupiter. Three of the brightest bodies in the night sky, they will create a spectacular sight as you look to the west just after sunset tomorrow (Sunday, March 25) and Monday (March 26).

Venus and Jupiter are not as close together as they were at mid-month, when they were within three arc-degrees of each other, but the Moon re-entering the scene makes for a more interesting conjunction than the two planets alone. Its being a thin waxing crescent showing plenty of Earthshine just makes it that much better.

This is how it will look on Sunday at approximately 8:00 p.m. local time, with the Moon between the planets and closer to Jupiter.

And this is how it will look on Monday, again at approximately 8:00 p.m. local time, with the Moon just above the planets but still very close to Venus. After Monday, the Moon will continue on its fast-paced retrograde path toward the east and move out of the frame, so if you want to see this rare event, do yourself a favor and get out there just after sunset either tomorrow or Monday night.

Forza, Jimmie!

Today Jimmie Johnson added his name to those of John Force, Michael Schumacher, Tony Schumacher, the New York Yankees, the Boston Celtics, and the Montreal Canadiens on the short list of elites who have won five consecutive championships.

This year he had to fight hard for it, beating out Denny Hamlin by only 39 points and Kevin Harvick by 41. This was Johnson’s first come-from-behind championship; Hamlin led by 15 at the start of the last race of the season in Homestead.

Congratulations to Jimmie, Chad, Rick, and the whole Hendrick team! Now get out there and put those pit crews through some extra training in the off-season so you can try for a sixth. This one was way too close for comfort.
